Testing Grounding With A Multimeter

At Be Grounded, we are passionate about helping people reconnect with the Earth’s natural energy using Earthing™ products. Grounding (also known as Earthing) has been shown to reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being. But how can you be sure that your Earthing product is working and that you’re actually grounded?

One of the best ways to verify proper grounding is by measuring the change in your body’s voltage using a multimeter. In this article, we’ll guide you step-by-step on how to do this, based on the original work of Gaétan Chevalier, Ph.D.

Why Measure Body Voltage?

When ungrounded, your body can act as an antenna, absorbing alternating current (AC) voltage from electrical wiring and devices in your environment. This voltage can interfere with your body’s natural electrical state.

By grounding yourself with an Earthing product, the excess voltage is dissipated into the Earth, reducing your body’s exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

Using a multimeter allows you to see the difference in body voltage before and after grounding, proving that your Earthing product is working.

What You’ll Need

To measure body voltage, you will need:

✔ A multimeter (also called a voltmeter)

✔ An extra Earthing grounding cord

✔ An alligator clip cord (available at hardware stores)

✔ An outlet socket checker (to ensure your outlet is properly grounded)

Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Body Voltage

Step 1: Check Your Outlet for Proper Grounding

Before using a multimeter, make sure your outlet is properly grounded.

  1. Use an outlet checker to test your socket.
  2. If the checker indicates that the outlet is grounded, you can plug in your Earthing product.
  3. If your outlet is not grounded (common in older homes), you may need to use an Earthing ground rod instead.

Step 2: Set Up Your Multimeter

Please note your mulitmeter need to be sensitive enough to read millivolts and ideally an auto range function ( ṽ)

  1. Plug the red probe of the multimeter into the voltage (V) port.
  2. Plug the black probe into the COM (common) port.
  3. Set your multimeter to AC volts (V~ or V- with a wave symbol). Do not use DC volts!

Step 3: Ground Your Multimeter

  1. Take your black probe and attach it to the ground port of your electrical outlet using an Earthing grounding cord and an alligator clip cord.
  2. This ensures that your meter has a proper ground reference.

Step 4: Measure Your Body Voltage

  1. Hold the red probe between your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Take a reading. This is your ungrounded body voltage—the amount of AC voltage your body is picking up from the surrounding environment.
  3. Now, touch your Earthing product (e.g., grounding mat, sheet, or patch).
  4. Take another reading while touching the product.

Step 5: Compare the Results

Your ungrounded voltage might be anywhere from 1V to 10V or higher, depending on the EMFs in your room.

Once grounded, your body voltage should drop significantly, ideally by a factor of 20 or more.

For example, if your ungrounded voltage was 5V, a well-grounded reading should be around 0.25V (250mV) or lower.

You won’t always see 0V, as small background electrical noise will remain. However, any significant drop confirms proper grounding.

Understanding the Results

Dr. Gaétan Chevalier conducted studies showing that grounding instantly reduces body voltage. In one test, a person’s body voltage was 8.35V before grounding and 0.09V (90mV) after grounding—a 93-fold decrease!

He also demonstrated that electrical devices in the room influence body voltage. Turning off and unplugging lamps, clocks, and radios further reduced the ungrounded voltage, proving that our environment constantly exposes us to electrical fields.

The Bigger Picture: Grounding and Health

While reducing body voltage is a measurable effect of grounding, the real benefit comes from the Earth’s free electrons, which help neutralize inflammation and oxidative stress. People often experience:

✅ Less pain (within minutes)

✅ Better sleep

✅ Reduced stress and anxiety

✅ Faster recovery from injuries

If you, or someone you know, has any pain, try this simple test:

• Go outside barefoot.
• Walk, stand, or sit barefoot
• Make sure you have some skin touching the ground.
• Note your approximate pain level.
• Stay connected to the ground for a minimum of 30 minutes (but 60 minutes is better)
• Note your pain level again.

In most cases, you will find that the pain has reduced.  You’ll feel better.  You will feel calmer.

It can make a believer out of a skeptic.

Measuring body voltage with a multimeter is a simple yet powerful way to see Earthing in action. If your readings drop significantly when using an Earthing product, you can be confident that you are properly grounded.
