Welcome to a world of better sleep, reduced stress, and natural wellbeing. But before you can enjoy the benefits, it’s important to set it up correctly, especially in a UK home where plug design and electrical systems are slightly different than elsewhere.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to set up your grounding sheet safely and effectively so you don’t have to sit there guessing. It is worth noting that this is relatively straight forward but who doesn’t love a good set of instructions.
What You’ll Need
To set up your grounding sheet in a UK home, make sure you have the following:
- A grounding sheet or mat (carbon-based, not silver-threaded)
- A grounding cord with a built-in resistor for safety
- A UK 3-pin plug adapter or socket tester
- Access to a properly grounded outlet (with the Earth pin wired)
Step 1: Identify a Grounded Socket in Your Home
Before plugging anything in, make sure the socket you plan to use is actually grounded. In most modern UK homes, the third pin (the longest vertical one) in your 3-pin outlet is the earth/ground pin.
However, it’s essential to confirm this with a socket tester.
Step 2: Connect the Grounding Cord to the Sheet
Take the grounding cord provided and attach the press-stud or snap clip to the connector on the sheet itself. The snap should fasten securely—this is what allows the electrons from the Earth to transfer to the sheet’s conductive material.
At BeGrounded, our products use carbon-infused mats and sheets for better conductivity and durability than traditional silver-threaded options.
Step 3: Plug the Cord into the Wall Socket
Take the other end of your grounding cord (the plug end) and insert it into the earth pin slot of your UK plug adapter. This is usually the top pin of the 3-pin socket. The other two pins (live and neutral) aren’t used at all. Your grounding plug should only connect to the earth.
Most grounding adapters are designed specifically for this, often with plastic dummy pins for the live and neutral, and only a metal earth pin.
Safety Note: All of our cords include a built-in 100kΩ resistor to protect against any electrical fault and ensure peace of mind.
Step 4: Place on the bed with a cotton top sheet for comfort
Our Grounding sheets work well underneath a natural fibre (cotton or bamboo) top sheet. This way you don’t even notice it’s there
- Make sure there’s just one thin layer between you and your grounding sheet – so not thick pyjamas, for example, as this will hinder the flow of electrons into the body
- A pillowcase or half-sheet for head or torso contact also work well
Step 5: Care and Maintenance
To keep your grounding sheet working optimally:
- As the sheet goes directly on the mattress and underneath the top sheet you won’t need to wash it often
- Occasionally you may want to wipe it down with a mild detergent (no bleach, or harsh chemical cleaners)
- Air dry
Test periodically with a continuity tester or multimeter if you want to confirm it’s still conducting properly.
Here at BeGrounded we provide easy-care mats that don’t lose conductivity over time—no delicate silver threads to worry about!
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to leave the socket switched on?
- No. Since you’re not drawing any power, the socket can remain off at the switch. You’re only using the earth pin, not the live or neutral.
Can I use a grounding rod instead?
- Yes! If you’re unsure about your indoor sockets, you can run the cord from your grounding sheet to a grounding rod staked into the soil outside. Just need to be sure it stays well-positioned in the earth.
Is it safe for all UK homes?
- Grounding is safe in any properly wired UK home. If your home is older or has outdated wiring, you may wish to test your sockets.
